Lehmann urges Arsenal footballers to deliver

London, Aug 16 (IANS): Arsenal's iconic goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has challenged his former club's footballers to stop talking about something "special" and deliver the side's first English Premier League (EPL) title since 2004.

Several of the north Londoners' players have talked up their title chances this season but Arsene Wenger's side was beaten 0-2 by West Ham United in the season opener on August 9.

"I have heard the players saying that this season is going to be 'special' and I'm curious how this speciality will be displayed,” Lehmann, who played 62 times for Germany, was quoted as saying by goal.com on Saturday.

The former Schalke, Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper says failure to win the EPL would be "another disappointment" and backs attacker Mesut Ozil to finally come good.

"Everybody now is expecting that they have to win the championship again and anything less would be another disappointment," Lehmann, who was part of Arsenal's squad that won the EPL in 2003-04, said.

"The fans are expecting it. They've got a fantastic club and infrastructure, a fantastic stadium. Now it's down to the players and of course it's up to everybody there to perform and win it -- not only talk about something 'special' which could happen, whatever that means," the goalie, who made 200 appearances for the club, said.

"I don’t know him that well in terms of his mentality, but sometimes you see him playing and you think, 'wow! What a fantastic player'," Lehmann, who took international retirement in 2008, said.
