Dammam, Aug 17: Traffic police in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province have arrested a driver whose trailer in the upright position crashed into an overhead sign on the Jubail highway.
The truck was impounded by the police and the owner was summoned for questioning, Saudi site Sabq reported on Monday.
The head of the transportation ministry office in the Eastern Province Ahmad Al Yami said they had contacted the police after they became aware of the incident.
“Under cooperation between the two official sides, the truck was impounded, the driver was detained and the owner was summoned,” he said. “The owner and the driver will bear the cost of the new overhead sign in line with the rules and regulations for destroying public property. There is a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone who breaks the rules, and we urge all drivers to be careful, comply with the traffic regulations and preserve public property,” he said.
The video of the highway accident showed how the truck was moving in the upright position and that the driver did not pay attention to the honking to alert him about the risks ahead.
The clip went viral and prompted calls for severe punishment against the driver for his dangerous negligence and for putting people’s lives at risk through his carelessness.
