Implement OROP expeditiously: Assam CM to centre

Guwahati, Aug 19 (IANS): Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday urged the central government to settle the issue of 'One rank, One pension' (OROP) scheme for ex-servicemen expeditiously.

"It is shameful for the nation that our war heroes have to resort to fast-unto-death and then humiliated by police personnel," he said in a statement, referring to the action taken by Delhi Police against protesting ex-servicemen in the national capital on the eve of Independence Day.

Gogoi also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to implement OROP to uphold the pride, prestige and morale of the war heroes.

Retired servicemen have been demanding equal pension to those retiring at the same rank regardless of when they retire.
