Udupi: Sorake leads district in paying tributes to Urs, Rajiv Gandhi

Udupi, Aug 21: The birth centenary of former chief minister D Devaraj Urs and the 71st birthday of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were observed at Lions Bhavan in Brahmagiri on Thursday August 20.



District-in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake offered flowers to photos and lit the lamp. The programme was organized by the zilla panchayat, backward classes and minority department.

Sorake said, “Devaraj Urs is credited with the implementation of land reforms in the state and he has provided social justice and developed confidence among tenants. Approximately 3 lac beneficiaries get the advantage from undivided Dakshina Kannada district. Devaraj Urs found solution for all loopholes in land reform and he led to freedom from slavery through reform.”

He further said that Urs introduced many developmental programmes aimed at eradicating inequality in the society and implemented a policy of minimum wage for workers. “He was a humanist and facilitated a hostel for OBC students,” added Sorake.

D Dayananda, lecturer, Government Women’s PU College, delivered a lecture on the life and achievements of D Devaraj Urs. Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj presided over the programme.

Students who topped SSLC and PU were felicitated by the department. Gopal Sherigar and Asha Naik were honoured on the occasion.

DC R Vishal, CEO Kanagavalli, Zilla Panchayat president Savita Shivanand Kotian, and taluk panchayat president Sunitha Naik were present.
