France vows to work with new Greek government

Paris, Aug 22 (IANS): France took note of Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras' resignation after Athens received the first installment of its $97.56 billion bailout deal, the French foreign ministry said on Friday.

"France is determined to work with the Greek government for the future implementation of the (bailout) programme, which has just been approved by all the states of the euro area," Xinhua citied the ministry statement.

The statement noted that Paris would continue to hold regular talks with officials in Athens to carry out the third aid plan which would help the debt-ridden country return to growth and create jobs.

On Thursday evening, Tsipras, in office since January 25, announced his government's resignation after a revolt by nearly a third of lawmakers from his left-wing Syriza party who refused the new bailout deal. His decision to step down paved the way for a snap general election.

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Friday charged Evangelos Meimarakis, Greece's main opposition conservative New Democracy party, to form a new government.
