Last rites held of girl killed in Onam revelry


Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 22 (IANS): The last rites of the girl who was hit by a jeep during Onam revelry in her college campus here ware held on Saturday.

The 21-year-old girl, Thasni Basheer, was hit by a jeep carrying students engaged in Onam celebrations on Wednesday, following which she collapsed on Thursday.

She was a third-year civil engineering student at the College of Engineering Thiruvananthapuram (CET) which has in the past seen many fatal accidents.

"The probe has just begun and we have not decided on the exact number of accused. All the accused will be taken to task," Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar Gurudin told IANS.

The principal of the college has suspended 12 students who were riding in the jeep.

The incident drew a strong reaction on the social media with people creating pressure on police and government to act swiftly in the matter.

A demand to ban private vehicles inside the college campuses has also come up.
