AAP slams centre over CNG fitness scam

New Delhi, Aug 22 (IANS): The AAP on Saturday slammed the central government for declaring the Delhi government's decision to probe the multi-crore CNG fitness scam as invalid and accused it of shielding Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung.

"The Aam Aadmi Party views the Narendra Modi government's move as a direct compromise with corruption and a desperate move to shield the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, whose role in the CNG scam is suspect," the party said.

The party also said the decision amounted to constitutional impropriety and raised serious "questions of conflict of interest".

"It is beyond any reasonable understanding as to why the Modi government is trying to bury the multi-crore scam which continued unchecked for seven years during the Congress regime, and in which many ministers and key bureaucrats of Sheila Dikshit government are already under scanner," it added.

"What is further intriguing that the Delhi LG, who overlooked the key findings of two probe agencies - Anti Corruption Branch and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) - and who should have recused himself from any further deliberation in any matter related to the CNG fitness scam, is on the contrary making public statements about this scam."

A CBI probe had revealed irregularities in awarding the contract of operation and maintenance of inspection and certification of CNG vehicles -- thereby causing a loss of Rs.100 crore to the Delhi government.
