Six arrested in Bengal over abetment to suicide

Kolkata, Aug 24 (IANS): Six people including four women have been arrested in Baranagar near Kolkata for allegedly abetting the suicide of a girl who burnt herself to death on Sunday.

"We have arrested six people on charges of abetment to suicide. Four were sent to judicial custody while two are in police custody," a police official said on Monday.

Police said the prime accused, Pritam De, who is alleged to have instigated the girl to commit the act, was still missing.

"Rana, a friend of Pritam De, and Kamal Kar (a relative of Rana) were sent to police custody, while four women are in judicial custody. Investigation is still in a preliminary stage but we are making good progress," police said.

The family of the deceased girl alleged that De and his family had publicly humiliated the girl which led her to commit suicide.

On Sunday, the girl had gone to fetch water from a public tap, where family members of De allegedly disgraced her and even tore her clothes.

"This forced her to commit suicide," a family member of the girl alleged.
