Mumbai, Aug 25 (Mid-day): The child was run over by a speeding car in one of the narrow lanes behind Colaba market on Sunday; doctors could not save his life and the body of the child was handed over to the family yesterday
A 3-year-old’s trip for an ice cream treat with his father turned fatal in Colaba on Sunday evening. The child was run over by a four-wheeler.
The boy was rushed to Bombay Hospital, where he was declared dead on Monday morning due to the severe injuries sustained from the accident. A navy official nabbed the accused driver, when he was looking to run away from the spot. The accused has been identified as Hasan Chikalgar (29).

He owns a shop in the Colaba market; the child has been identified as Durgesh Agrahari, and his father Ajay runs a small stall in Colaba market and resides in the same area. Durgesh’s post-mortem was done at JJ Hospital on Monday and by late afternoon, his body was handed over to his parents.
The family was in a complete state of shock and was not willing to speak about the incident. A relative at Bombay Hospital told mid-day, “As it was Sunday, Durgesh was demanding ice cream from his father Ajay. At 5.30 pm Ajay decided to take Durgesh for an ice cream treat.
They were both walking towards an ice cream parlour in Colaba which is a few minutes away from their home. Ajay was holding Durgesh’s hand and both were walking together.” Accused driver Chikalgar was driving his Maruti Ertiga car.
The police officials said he could not see the child, as the car’s chassis is a little high. The father-son duo was walking down one of the narrow lanes behind the main Colaba market. Chikalgar was speeding when he came out of a lane, and did not notice Durgesh, who was run over.
It took just a few seconds for the entire incident to happen Ajay took some time to comprehend what was going on. A family member said, “Ajay picked up Durgesh and rushed him to Bombay Hospital. A lot of blood was coming out from the child’s face and he was totally unconscious.
