Puttur: Mega protest at Sorake demands ammendments to Juvenile Justice Act

Puttur, Aug 25: A huge protest was held in the town on Monday August 24, demanding to get to the root of sexual assault on a Dalit student at Sorake in Sarve village in the taluk on July 28, and seeking to bring ammendments to Juvenile Justice Act. The protest was held under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada district Dalit Seva Samiti.

The protest was supported by Vishwa Hindu Parishat, Bajrang Dal, Jayakarnataka, Kannada Sene, Akhil Bharat Vidyarthi Parishad and some other organizations.

A protest rally taken out on the occasion which began from Darbe circle ended in front of mini Vidhan Soudha here. The leaders who spoke on the occasion noted that the accused, who was arrested, had been released on bail, and that those who supported the accused had not been arrested. They demanded immediate arrest of the remaining people.

After holding the protest in front of mini Vidhan Soudha, the protesters went to the office of the MLA. Getting angry at not finding her there, they sat in protest demonstration. The MLA, who was on a visit to the house of a person in Sarve who had died, returned to office thereafter, received the memorandum, and objected to raising of slogans against her. She advised the protesters to send a memorandum to the MP too, as ammending Juvenile Justice Act falls under the purview of the central government, duly promising to bring the contents of the memorandum to the notice of the state government.

Taluk panchayat member, Sumati, Dalit Sava Samiti president, Sesappa Bedrakadu, taluk president, Giridhar Naik, leaders of Hindu organizations like Dr M K Prasad and Arun Kumar Puttila, ABVP leader, Yashaswini, and Jayakarnataka youth unit direct president, Saaja Rai Balajja were among those who addressed the gathering.
