Soldier killed in Pakistan firing

Srinagar, Aug 25 (IANS): An Indian soldier was killed on Tuesday in unprovoked firing by Pakistani troops on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, sparking gun battles between the two armies.

A police officer told IANS here that the Pakistan Army began firing on Badal post in Nowgam Kupwara sector in Kupwara district. It led to the death of a soldier from Kumaon Regiment.

"Effective retaliation has started by troops from the Indian side," the officer said.

Indian and Pakistani troops have been regularly firing and shelling each other's position on the Jammu and Kashmir border. India accuses Pakistan of repeatedly breaching the 2003 ceasefire.
