PU alumnus is CSIR director-general


Chandigarh, Aug 25 (IANS): An alumnus of Panjab University, Girish Sahni, has been appointed as director general (DG) of the Council of Scientific Research (CSIR), a varsity spokesman said here on Tuesday.

Sahni, who is the first scientist from Chandigarh region to be elevated to the prestigious position, has been the director, Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Chandigarh since 2005.

He did his graduation and post-graduation from the department of microbiology at PU.

In 2014, PU bestowed the Vigyan Rattan Award to Sahni for his contribution in developing a novel clot-buster, which is saving the lives of thousands of people suffering from heart attacks.

"Dr Sahni has been in the forefront of the establishment and promotion of CRIKC (Chandigarh Region of Innovation and Knowledge Cluster), which is a conglomerate of nearly twenty top institutions of research located in the tri-city," the spokesman said.
