Committee for better coordination on organ transplant issues

New Delhi, Aug 25 (IANS): The health ministry has decided to set up an inter-ministerial committee to resolve issues of coordination in tasks related to organ transplant.

The committee will also obtain support from related organisations.

The ministry also decided to make the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation a registered society to give it more autonomy.

The decisions were taken during a meeting held by the health secretary on how to improve the mechanism for organ donation in the country.

"It was also decided to strengthen the infrastructure at regional and state levels. A programme will be launched for suitably recognising/ honouring families of those who donate organs after their death. Also, comprehensive training would be provided to staff handling organ transplant in various hospitals," said a ministry statement.
