Modi government releases list of 98 smart cities

New Delhi, Aug 27 (NDVT): The government today announced the names of 98 towns and cities chosen for its Smart Cities project after a nationwide "competition" between states.

The winners include Lucknow and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Baroda in Gujarat, Greater Mumbai, Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu, and Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

Of those chosen for the project, 24 are capital cities, 24 are business hubs and 18 are cultural centres. Cities like Patna, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram and Shimla have failed to make the cut in round one.

Uttar Pradesh gets the maximum number of cities with Kanpur, Allahabad, Rampur, Agra and Aligarh also being selected. Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Thane also make the cut from Maharashtra.

North-eastern towns and cities like Guwahati, Kohima, Imphal, Aizawl, Shillong, and Agartala have also been chosen.

Each state will get at least one Smart City, which, in PM Modi's words, translates to "very high quality of life comparable with any developed European city".

To earn a Smart City tag, the city has to check all the boxes that include service levels, existing infrastructure and track record. Proposals from states were also judged on how realistic is its execution.

The top 20 cities will be financed this year.

The rest of the cities will be asked to get their act together, focus on deficiencies and prepare for Round 2 of the competition.

During the selection process, each state was assigned a specific number of Smart City slots based on urban population among other factors.

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous and politically vital state, will get the most number of Smart Cities - 13. The state government has also recommended Congress president Sonia Gandhi's constituency Rae Bareli.

Tamil Nadu will have 12 and Maharashtra will get 10 such cities. Madhya Pradesh will have seven Smart Cities and Gujarat and Karnataka will have six each (including Mangaluru).

Sources say Jammu and Kashmir wanted time to decide between Jammu and Srinagar as its nominee for the project.

In the next five years, Rs. 3 lakh crore will be spent in developing the towns to provide world class infrastructure, sustainable environment and smart solutions.

The Smart City mission is viewed as the government's big push for urban renewal in almost 100 Indian cities and towns. While launching it in June this year, PM Modi had said "Urban planning should begin at the bottom."

Bengaluru not being in the list of smart cities is the way the PM thanks the voters for electing his party in the BBMP elections. The timing of the release of the list of smart cities post BBMP election results is also an indication of the "Negativity towards opposition Governments".

If implemented really it should be a good proposal.
There will be balance of development all over India.
Influx / migration to existing big cities like Mumbai, Bangalore etc. may be contained. Quality of life in big cities will improve.
Dominance or monopoly of few cities and region will also reduced.

..Before commenting negatively on MODI, first read the DW completely..its center/state partnership initiative..all works carried out state Govt & MCC..List also provided by state Govt, based on points cities chosen..so whats there to comment negatively on MODI!!..Let us hope basic eminities will improve..but its unfortunate that in our state, Govt dont have any control over Real estate mafia..instead every politician have real estate business directly or indirectly..thats why common man not allowed build house in 3-4 cent or run pillar to pillar to get licence..there will be side effect, Builders suddenly will hike rates & land price will shoot up..unless state Govt controls real estate mafia, people will wont benifited..

The Ministers can travel later after doing the basic development. out of the total Investment for the smart cities 50% going in Ministers pockets, 25% in contract firms pockets and remaining 25% for building smart cities. So Sikulars alias Fake Seculars alias Seculars scratch your head, no relief for you & good, better & best example is BBMP Election results which showd their place for SECULARS by educated Bangaloreans. So think before you start obstructing in developmental works. BBMP results is the reflection of Parliament blockage by so called fraud SECULARS.

"very high quality of life comparable with any developed European city".
How can you compare a city with European cities as long as your goondas check on what we eat, when we eat ,where we eat, what we drink, where we drink, what days we celebrate and how we celebrate.
Dear PM,we are spending crores on your flights ,your schemes are costing us of crores of rupees, so clean the river Ganga first and then plan the cities.
Because none of your schemes are realized yet. You and your Amit shah party boast that your party achieved success by opening crores of Bank accounts. They opened it because they are waiting for the black money lottery that you spoke on election campaign.
Now please do not announce this on a foreign trip ,my worry is what if thousands of NRI come back to see the developed city and who will pay their return ticket?
You are the costliest PM we ever had in India, so you are very dear to our country. Nobody spoke so much about India and the worry is what if thousands of foreign tourist come here to see your developments?
Please don’t force people to open bank account with 10 or 100 rupees, then it will be a trouble for the bank to maintain that account and the public will lose the money and account.
We know that it sounds very interesting about getting 15 lac per person if the Black money comes back and distributed. But now people will remember it again in next LS 2019 so we have to plan something new, what about 5 cents 40 X 50 site on the Moon, please Kuch Socho?
