Mangaluru, Aug 27: The joyous and colorful festival of Onam was celebrated at St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor on August 27.

The strong contingent of SJEC students from Kerala took the lead in organizing this celebration, which has become a part of annual festivities held in the college. Onam is the state festival of Kerala celebrated with great fervor by Malyalees present across the globe. The day marks the yearly homecoming of revered King Māveli.

On that day everybody entering the college administrative block was greeted with a traditional colorful 'Pookalam', with intricate designs laid out with flowers. The amazing Pookalam, with diyas lit around it was a visual treat for everybody gathered. Fr Joseph Lobo, director of SJEC, lit the traditional 'Nilavilakk' to mark the commencement of the celebrations. This was followed by the traditional 'Thiruvaathira' dance, performed with great elegance by the students. A folk song was rendered by the students with everybody present joining in the chorus. The celebrations offered a glimpse of the rich culture of Kerala.

Addressing the students, Fr Joseph Lobo, called upon the students to celebrate the spirit of oneness and joy which are the essence of Onam.
