Notice to Himachal over caste discrimination in temple

Shimla, Aug 28 (IANS): The Himachal Pradesh High Court has issued notice to the state over caste discrimination in the ancient Maheshwari Devi Temple in Shimla district.

A division bench of Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice P.S. Rana passed these orders on Thursday while hearing a writ petition by Mathu Ram.

He alleged that the temple management committee of Maheshwari Devi near Matiana, some 55 km from the state capital, made unconstitutional changes in the temple constitution, baring the entry of scheduled castes in the temple to perform prayers.

It also alleged that the deity is owner of huge assets of the temple.

The bench listed the matter for next hearing on November 5.
