Athens, Aug 28 (IANS): Greece's snap general election is scheduled to take place on September 20, according to a presidential decree issued on Friday.
The decree formally dissolved the current assembly and set the date for the first session of the new parliament for October 1, Xinhua news agency reported.
The official declaration of early national polls came eight days after the resignation of the eight-month Leftist government of former prime minister Alexis Tsipras and the appointment of an interim administration under the Greek constitution.
The transitional government under Supreme Court head Vassiliki Thanou, who on Thursday became Greece's first female premier, was sworn in earlier on Friday.
"All members of the government are ready to do their best so that the elections are conducted fairly and all other matters be resolved in an excellent manner," Thanou said.
