First transsexual church wedding in Denmark

Copenhagen, Aug 28 (IANS/EFE): A church in the Danish city of Ringsted, west of Copenhagen, will on Saturday host the first religious wedding of a transsexual couple in Denmark, public television channel DR reported on Friday.

The Danish Parliament approved in June 2012 a new law to allow gay marriages in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark, but so far, transsexuals have not been included in this approval.

Isabell Storm and Cecilie Mundt said that they not only want to have a civil marriage, but also want approval from the church, which would be "beautiful".

The pastor of St. Bendt's Church, Ringsted said that he is delighted to be the first pastor to marry two transsexuals in the Nordic country, where there is no separation between church and state.

In June 1989 Denmark became the first country in the world to legally recognize civil unions for same-sex couples.
