Mangalore, Jun 23: Friday June 22 marked a landmark achievement in the history of New Mangalore Port as it became only the second port in the country after Chennai to install CCTV Surveillance System.
The system, costing Rs 34.5 lac, was inaugurated by joint secretary (ports) of the department of shipping of the union ministry of shipping, road transport and highways Rakesh Srivastava.
Speaking on the occasion, Srivastava said that the ports constitute a major chunk of the total export-import trade of the country, which in turn increases the Gross Domestic Production (GDP).
The installation of the Surveillance System was done in the light of the recent expansion of the port in terms of business and capacity to handle heavier vessels. Last year the port handled nine lac tonnes of fertilisers, said NMPT chairman P Tamilvanan.
He also informed that the port will get railway tracks inside and outside to facilitate easy handling of cargo.
Among those present were NMPT deputy chairman M A Bhaskarachar, secretary C Harichandran and deputy conservator Capt K V Vaswani.
