Videocon's Kolkata unit starts manufacturing mobile phones


Kolkata, Aug 29 (IANS): Domestic electronics company Videocon on Saturday said that it had started manufacturing mobile handsets at its Salt Lake facility here.

Earlier this year, the company had said that it was planning to start three manufacturing units in the country in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Madurai.

A top company said that the new facility is the first manufacturing unit in the eastern region of the country, and the group's second mobile manufacturing plant after Aurangabad in Maharashtra.

The facility, which will only make feature phones at the start, will have a production capacity of three million units a year. The unit, which will make smartphones and tablets as well, entailed an investment of Rs.50 crore for the group.

The official also said that in future, the facility would also manufacture mobile handsets of other companies as well.
