Gujarat quota row: 9 policemen booked in alleged custodial death

Ahmedabad, Aug 29 (PTI): After the Gujarat High ordered a CID probe, nine policemen including two inspectors and a sub-inspector have been booked for the alleged custodial death of a 32-year-old man detained during Patel quota agitation.

Hardik Patel, who is leading the agitation by Patel community for reservation under OBC quota, today said he is likely to attend funeral of the victim, Swetang Patel, tomorrow and warned that government will be held responsible "if anything happens".

Assistant Commissioner of Police K D Pandya said police inspectors P D Parmar and R R Vasava of Bapunagar were among nine policemen booked in the Swetang Patel death case.

"We had late last night registered an FIR in Swetang Patel's death case against two police inspectors of Bapunagar, one D-staff PSI and six other policemen of D-staff for causing death," Pandya told PTI.

D-staff or detection staff is responsible for conducting investigations in cases filed with a police station.

However, advocate for the victim's family B M Mangukia claimed that the FIR did not have names of all the police officials responsible for the alleged custodial death.

"We had demanded that all those responsible be named, but they (police) did not register an FIR as per our demand and left out many high ranking officials, including ACP. We do not want to make lower ranked policemen a scapegoat in the case," Mangukia told PTI.

"We sat in the police station for about five hours to register an FIR.... This is non-compliance of the high court order and a contempt of court as well," Mangukia added.

Swetang was allegedly forcibly taken away by police on August 25. A plea was moved by Prabhaben Patel, Swetang's mother, which said he was allegedly beaten by the police and ultimately he succumbed to the injuries. The Gujarat High had ordered a second autopsy of the body which stated that he had died due to severe head injury.

Observing that prima facie it was a case of homicide, the HC yesterday directed the administration to file an FIR and also ordered a CID probe.

Meanwhile, agitation leader Hardik Patel said, "I am likely to take part in funeral of Swetang Patel tomorrow."

When asked if the Patel community members will take any "precautionary steps" during the funeral procession, Hardik said government will be held responsible if anything happens.

"I have urged my community people to keep calm, but if anything wrong happens there (in the funeral procession), government will have to take responsibility," Hardik told PTI.

Hardik's detention after the mega rally on August 25 that he organised for reservation was followed by widespread violence in the state in which ten people including a police constable lost their lives.

Following the violence, curfew was clamped in various parts of the state including Ahmedabad city on August 26.

Curfew has been lifted today from all the areas of the city, including Bapunagar where the funeral is likely to take place tomorrow.

Moun Modi orchestrating violence thru police, Home Ministry, to suppress freedom of expression, which is nothing new under this Goonda Raj.

Thanks to HC, who took stern legal action in booking criminal cops in this brutal episode.

    Down with goonda raj,
    Down with police brutality,
Down with suppression of Human rights, and Constitutional rights in India.

    Jai Hind !!

It is shame for the BJP and the PM who was boasting so much about Gujarath.
They are on the process of erecting a tall statue of Vallabh Bhai Patel and the Patel community is discarded and not given their dues all these years who supported Modi for three terms.
Now the entire world patel community is watching the Gujarat fire.
If you see the real videos of police action on youtube
and Police atrocity on citizen then you can imagine how the police reacted during Godhra issue.
it is clear that police let the BJP and BD men to rape the Muslim women and kill them in large numbers.
Further this was the reason for Mumbai and other blasts because Muslims were hurt after watching videos all over India.
And again Sangh reacted through Aseemanand,Prgya sadhvi ,capt Purohit and now you say Muslims are terrorist?
The Gujarati men ,Gujarati BJP,Modi, and Gujarati police are responsible for the entire mess in all over India.
The goal was to become PM and get USA and Uk free visa? And travel around the world on tax payers money?
And the innocent people are simply voting BJP on belief that Ram mandir will be built.
Who want Ram mandir if its built at the cost lives of millions of Indians?

If you can see one such clip of Police breaking the panes of various cars parked!!!! I just confused who is agitating and who is stopping them!!!! Let the court takes its own stands but if Gujarat Patels comes under OBC category then can we call them Patel Bhai OBCwale???? I think that time they will file a case in the court for calling them OBCwale like Dalits are doing in our region….. They need all the reservation under Dalits, SC or ST but we can’t call them Dalits!!!!!

Patel community is well off. Why they need reservation. This must be a conspiracy by some politicians to destabilise Gujrath and Defame Modi's government. Check Hardik Patel and his groups mobile for any link with political party. Even policemen are paid to do alleged custodial death.

Nothing will happen to these policemen because of their political backing. The culprits of godhra carnage were punished by the court but not the police officers who have killed 1250 minority community people are not yet punished instead they have released from jail by the present government,.Mumbai bomb blast culprits are hanged but not the people and their leaders who are destroyed babri masjid. Then the up cm given undertaking to high court such barbaric act wont be happen but the same leader were behind the destruction of the masjid. Now he has become governor of the sate.If these type of judicial system continue in this country the time is no far away for anarchy.

Not only in Gujarath. No where in India, aam aadmi is getting justice. Only the politicians are benefited after Independence. People we are only held responsible for this. because we are not united. We are all separated ourselves because of castism. Politicians are also required the same that we people should not unite. If we unite, they will be fixed.

Now the Patel community of all political affiliation is alienated from the BJP some way because the Patel community has the greatest closeness in between them than any other people of India.
When I talked with some of my Patel friends in the U.S. who were dreaming miracles in India, now have a different tone about Mr. Modi's leadership and the issue related to the Patel community.

Is history repeating? When he came into power in Gujarat as the CM in 2001, massive attacks on the Churches were taken place, no 1 in the nation in the attacks of the poor Christians. Then one current Minister of Karnataka made a statement specifically after the massive earthquake in Gujarat that it was some judgement upon Gujrat for hurting the defenseless Christians.

Later on, Gujarat came down to the lowest rank in hurting the Christians, it was a total transformation.

There is some mystery behind the Patel agitation only history will reveal that later on.

Dear Friend: Mr. Modi was indirectly helping his own State to have more industries established in Gujarat and totally ignoring even some of the BJP ruled States of India.

The Gujarat turmoil has shed a very dark cloud on the wonderful holy shining State of India.

The time of "coming around" has started.
