Lucknow, Sep 1 (IANS): The Uttar Pradesh government will take a slew of measures to boost road safety and cut down on mishaps in the state, an official said on Tuesday.

Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan has asked officials to prepare an action plan to prevent road mishaps on 1,200 accident-prone spots across the state, which have already been identified.

The public works department will repair roads and minimise curves on roads on a priority basis. In view of the increasing traffic in Lucknow, the inspector general of traffic police has been asked to prepare a plan to control traffic in the state capital.

The chief secretary has directed local urban bodies and officials concerned to remove encroachments and illegal hoardings from roadsides.

District Magistrates (DMs) have been asked to provide land for setting up regional centres for proper training of drivers.

Automated driving testing tracks would be established in 35 districts of Uttar Pradesh, including in Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Azamgarh and Kannauj by utilisation of the Road Safety Fund during the 2015-16 fiscal.

Transport Commissioner K. Ravindra Naik said that the working plan of Rs.25 crore approved for the current year would include Rs.6.60 crore for accident-prone spots, Rs.1.10 crore for purchasing publicity vans, Rs.1.50 crore for construction of automatic driving testing tracks, Rs.1.75 crore for driver testing tracks, Rs.2.85 crore for building fitness pit, Rs.70 lakh for mobile checking equipment, Rs.75 lakh for interceptors and Rs.25 lakh for evaluation and inspection of road safety measures.

Similarly, money would be spend on publicity of traffic rules, training, documentary films, partnership of voluntary agencies and breathalysers for checking drunken driving.
