Modi, Sonia congratulate Indian cricket team


New Delhi, Sep 1 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday congratulated the Indian cricket team for winning the test match against Sri Lanka and consequently the series.

"Congratulations to the Indian cricket team for the historic series win against Sri Lanka. We are proud of the team's impressive performance," Modi said.

In her message, Gandhi also congratulated the team for winning the test series.

"Coming after 22 years, this achievement of our cricketers had done the nation proud," she said.

India on Tuesday claimed an away Test series win against Sri Lanka after 22 years as they clinched the decisive third match at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) ground by 117 runs on the fifth day for a 2-1 triumph.

In pursuit of 386 runs for victory on the final day, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 268 in their second innings despite strong resistance from captain Angelo Mathews (110) and Kusal Perera (70).
