Lebanese activists storm environment ministry building


Beirut, Sep 1 (IANS): Lebanese activists from the "You Stink" movement on Tuesday stormed the building of the environment ministry in Beirut, and staged a sit-in calling for Environment Minister Mohammad Machnouk to resign amid the country's mounting waste crisis.

Around 40 protesters chanted "Machnouk - out, out, out!" and called on their compatriots to join them, EFE news reported.

The "You Stink" campaign warned of further escalation if its demands are not met, including solving the waste crisis and electing a new president for the Arab country, which has been left without a head of state since May 25, 2015 due to a political deadlock.

The waste crisis erupted in and resulted in clashes between protesters and security forces that have led to hundreds of injuries and arrests.
