First sentencing in CWG Scam: Five sent to jail

New Delhi, Sep 2 (Agencies): In the first sentencing in the 2010 Commonwealth Scam, five people have been sent to prison.

Four civic officials were sent to jail for four years and the managing director of a private firm, Sweka Power Tech Engineers, TP Singh, has been sentenced to six years by a Delhi court.

The convicts had asked for a lenient sentence arguing that they had spent around 11 months in jail during the trial.

This is the first case related to the Commonwealth scam decided by the court.

According to a CBI chargesheet in 2011, the convicts entered into a criminal conspiracy for upgrading street lights for the Commonwealth Games in October 2010 and awarded the contract to a private firm by manipulating tender documents.

This caused a loss of over Rs.1.42 crore to the government, said the CBI.

The CBI also charge-sheeted Mehul Karnik, an employee of Philips India, as an accused in the case, but he was later discharged.

Four officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi were held guilty of criminal conspiracy and cheating.

All corrupt people should be sent to jail irrespective of political party. This is just the beginning.

I am glad that BJP govt came int the center after a long time. Now not only Congress but all other parties will think twice before they make any dirty deal with public money.

The scam phobia created by both media and BJP, costed india dearly in terms of its growth and development.

Are there any corruption cases against Sonia ? Is she personally accused of any cheating or economic offences ? Certain members of the Congress party/former Coalition partners who are involved in any corruption are already facing the law. Why make imaginary accusations against Sonia ? These allegations against Sonia come only from the Chhadi Association members who are exploiting the human tendency of believing perception to be reality. Where is the evidence ?
We need to write with substance and fact and not just blindly believe anything that is thrown at us.

    Mr Jeevan,

Please do not demean the Italian waitresses. One thing is they are poor and honest workers and do not loot any country.

On another note, Italian waitresses get better salaries than most of the higher-ups in India.
