18 Turkish workers kidnapped in Iraq

Baghdad, Sep 2 (IANS): Unidentified gunmen on Wednesday kidnapped 18 Turkish workers in an eastern suburb of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a police source said.

At 5.00 a.m. (local time), the gunmen, clad in black uniforms and riding 20 vehicles, stormed a building of a Turkish construction company in the Shiite bastion of Sadr city area of Baghdad, Xinhua reported.

They tied the guards before kidnapping 18 Turkish workers.

The incident came a day after 50 unidentified gunmen abducted 42 detainees who were being transported from an army jail near the town of Dujail to the capital.

The detainees were supposed to be released due to lack of evidence on charges of terrorism.
