Poachers kill rhino in Assam

Guwahati, Sep 4 (IANS): Poachers have killed a one-horned rhino in Assam's Kaziranga National Park and taken away its horn, park officials said on Friday.

Park director M.K. Yadav said a rhino carcass had been recovered from the park.

This is the 13th one-horned rhino to be killed in the park this year.

"An operation has been launched to trace the poachers, and patrolling in the park has been intensified," Yadav said.

Almost the entire park, a UNESCO world heritage site and spread over 858 sq km, has been submerged under flood water, forcing animals to migrate to higher grounds.

Poachers often take advantage of the situation to kill animals, rhinos in particular.

At least 15 poachers have also been killed in the park this year.
