India for stronger ties with Afghanistan

Kabul, Sep 4 (IANS): India wants to have stronger ties with Afghanistan, a senior Indian official has said.

Sujata Mehta, Secretary in the external affairs ministry, said Kabul's economy would touch new heights if it forged stronger ties with New Delhi, Tolo News reported on Friday.

India was working on the Chabahar port project to provide an alternate transit route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, Mehta was quoted as saying.

Mehta said the need to connect Afghanistan to the global market was of critical importance.

Mehta is here to attend the sixth Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan.

Ministers from 30 countries and representatives from 40 international organisations are attending the two-day summit.
