Afghan president approves electoral reform recommendations


Kabul, Sep 7 (IANS): Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has approved seven recommendations of the special electoral reform commission by issuing a decree, a media report said on Monday.

Commission head Shah Sultan Akefi presented the recommendations during a meeting with Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah, Khaama Press reported.

The package presented by Akefi included eleven recommendations out of which seven were approved by President Ghani.

An official statement said President Ghani hailed the commission’s recommendations regarding the electoral reform which was presented in a short span of time.

The statement further added that the justice ministry and office of the administrative affairs to take immediate actions in a bid to provide legal ground for the implementation of the approved recommendations.

Some of the recommendations included cancellation of the previously issued voting cards, alteration in voting system where ballots could not be transferred into the parallel system, establishment of transparency committee to review major fraud cases and complaints against the election organisers, and enforcement of new conditions for the membership of electoral commission.
