Bangalore, Jul 2: This incident has relevance to the article published in these columns two days back. It’s kind of an eye-opener for all parents and adults who ignore realities.  It's time for a reality check, to take steps to protect their children from knowing how cyberspace and internet can be misused to take revenge against unsuspecting children and teenagers.

This is a real life incident as per the Cyber Crime Police records; the names have been changed to protect the identities.

A 13-year-old, 8th Standard schoolgirl was shocked when she saw a website in her name with obscene and abusive information about her. The child had to undergo this severe trauma for turning down the proposal of a man, who was once a close family friend.

The story goes like this:

The girl Kate (name changed) a 13-year-old, is living with her mother and two brothers in Fraser Town. The family got close to their neighbor Prince John, who was staying in the neighboring house as a paying guest. Slowly over a period of time he became so close to the family that they treated him like a family member.

The unsuspecting kid Kate became friendly with John and at his mollycoddling and charm had taken photographs with him. Once in the family good books, John proposed to Kate, which she turned down. Undeterred, John then approached Kate’s mother and put forth his marriage proposal, which even her mother rejected saying her daughter was too young to get married.

This seems to have angered John, so he threatened Kate that he would destroy her reputation by misusing her pictures. John being a call centre employee was well-versed with the internet. A few days later, he sent a message to the mobile phone of a family member. It read: “Hi Prince here. Visit the web ... Trust the true story. Rush to cafe now. Be the first visitor. The uncovered story and pics - enjoy...”

When the family checked the website, they were disgusted to see a website with an offensive title in the name of the Kate and John had even  put up obscene and abusive information with her details. Moreover this was linked to pornographic sites. He even had created his own stories and given vulgar information.

Shocked by this turn of events, Kate’s family panicked and sought the help of the Cyber Crime Police to control the damage and catch the culprit. The website was later blocked, but the efforts of the police to nab the culprit have not yet produced any results.

As per the statement of the officer attached to Cyber Crime Police Station in the city “John is a native of Kerala and he has no permanent address in the city. Moreover, he has changed his earlier job. Nobody knows about his address in Kerala. So, we are trying our best to trace him,”
