Pakistan's nuclear weapons 'not against anyone': Nawaz


Islamabad, Sep 9 (IANS): Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said his country would continue to maintain minimum nuclear deterrence for security purposes, but these weapons are "not against any one".

Prime Minister Sharif was briefed on the strategic and nuclear assets of the country during a meeting of the National Command Authority (NCA) in the capital Islamabad.

Matters pertaining to national security and defence were discussed in the meeting, Radio Pakistan reported.

The country will adhere to the policy of avoiding an arms race in the region, Sharif said at the the meeting which he chaired.

Sharif said Pakistan seeks peace and strategic stability in the south Asia region and considers conflict resolution as the means to achieve this goal.
