Waqf Board gets case registered against Shia cleric

Lucknow, Sep 10 (IANS): The Shia Waqf Board has got a case registered against eminent Shia cleric Kalb-e-Jawwad on the charge of selling land belonging to it, an official said on Thursday.

Waqf Board chairman Waseem Rizvi accused the cleric of selling Waqf properties worth Rs.100 crore and taking Rs.25 crore out of this as commission.

After the Board moved an application, special CJM Pallavi Agarwal gave the go-ahead for filing the case and also sought detailed evidence from the Board on September 18, the official said.

Rizvi, whose appointment was vehemently opposed by the Shia cleric, even leading to a long-drawn agitation and a lockout of Chhota and Bada Imambada for several days, said Jawwad sold a major chunk of land of the Board in Takaiyya Begum area for Rs.20 crore, apart from embezzling many other Waqf belongings.

Jawwad, however, denied the allegations and said the Waqf Board probe was "not true". He also demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into all Waqf properties.

"I have always demanded a thorough probe into the Waqf properties so that the records are set straight and the guilty booked," he said.
