Bangladesh university students protest over VAT on tuition fee

Dhaka, Sep 10 (IANS): Students of several private universities staged demonstrations in different parts of Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Thursday protesting over the 7.5 percent value added tax (VAT) on their tuition fees.

The demonstrations left traffic severely affected in Dhanmondi, Mohakhali, Gulshan and Rampura as protesters blocked the streets, bdnews24 reported.

Students had clashed with police at the same place on Wednesday while demonstrating. But no untoward incident has been reported so far.

The government in the 2015-16 budget proposed a 7.5 percent VAT on tuition fees for higher education in all private universities and medical and engineering colleges.

On July 4, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued an order imposing VAT.

Students of these private institutions have been protesting against the decision since then.
