Nepal rejects proposal to make it a Hindu nation

Kathmandu, Sep 14 (PTI): Nepal's Constituent Assembly today rejected calls to remove the key term secularism from the new Constitution and revert the Himalayan nation to a Hindu state, triggering protests by Hindu activists.

As the Constituent Assembly resumed voting on individual articles of the Constitution draft, more than two-thirds of the lawmakers rejected the amendment proposal to make Nepal a Hindu state and reaffirmed that it will remain a secular nation.

The proposal was made by Rastirya Prajatantra Party Nepal or National Democratic Party Nepal, a pro-Hindu group, which demanded that secularism be removed from the Constitution in the Article 4 and Hindu state be mentioned instead.

After Assembly Chairman Subas Chandra Nembang announced that the proposal has been rejected, Rastirya Prajatantra Party's Kamal Thapa demanded split voting, the Himalayan Times reported.

Thapa's proposal for a vote received the support of only 21 lawmakers in the 601-seat Constituent Assembly. As the CA Rules requires 61 persons to begin the split voting, the voting was not done.

The erstwhile Hindu state, Nepal was declared a secular state in 2007 after the success of the People's Movement of 2006.

During a public opinion collection held in July, majority of the people preferred the word 'Hindu' or 'religious freedom' instead of using the term 'secularism'.

Protesting the rejection of the proposal, a group of Hindu activists carrying yellow and saffron flags clashed with security personnel at New Baneshwar area in the capital.

The clash erupted after police used force to disperse the agitating activists who tried to enter the prohibitory area near the Constituent Assembly building.

They wanted to march towards the Assembly, demanding that Nepal be acknowledged as Hindu state in the new constitution.

The protesters attacked passing vehicles, including one of the United Nations.

Nepal yesterday entered the final phase of promulgating its new Constitution with the three major parties going ahead with clause-wise voting on the final draft of the statute despite a boycott by Madhesi parties and violent protests that have claimed nearly 40 lives.

The Madhesi parties are protesting against the seven province model of the federal structure as proposed by the major political parties.

Southern Nepal has witnessed turmoil since lawmakers from major political parties struck a breakthrough deal on August 15 to divide the country into seven provinces.

India has Hindus like me who are tolerant, moderate and who respect other religion and their practices. So please do not think that other religions can not survive in a Hindu Nation.

The collective wisdom of the Nepal Constituent Assembly shown its true Hindu credentials by reflecting the main tenets of Hinduism - "Sarva Dharma Samabhav" and "Ahimsa Paramo Dharma" in practice.

However, in our nation there is some kind of intolerance is taught/breed among fellow Hindu's in the name of upholding of Hinduism (Ex: quite often we hear/listen in Hindu samajotsava's the statements like chopping of Hands, Legs etc., to protect Hinduism).

One must take look at the history of Hindustan - Despite massive onslaught on Hinduism by Europeans & Moguls for couple of centuries during good olden days.., because of our true practicing of above Hindu tenets in its true spirit, even today Hinduism is standing tall as a living example for inclusive & cohesive human living (secularism).

In my opinion, the existence of Hinduism will be greatly jeopardized (sooner than later) if these two tenets are taken out in our religious practice.(any learned person can correct me if i am wrong).

Take and example of GCC COUNTRIES ask Hindus who live their... Does any Arab Hurts their religious Sentiments?

In India some fanatic organisatins wants to dictate minorities in the name of Hindu nation.

    @ Jayanth
How many Muslim majority countries are secular?
There are numerous examples where Muslim countries truly following secularism. I can give few examples,

Malaysian cabinet headed by Najeeb razaq has 5 Hindus in his cabinet and also good number of Senators, Christian and Buddhist ministers!! Bangladesh cabinet also the same and they have Several Hindu ministers, MPs both from BNP and Awami League. Hindus in Bangladesh are just 8% and yet their share in the public sector is several fold their share in the population.

At Indonesia Minister Gede Puspayoga is a Hindu & few Christians, H.S.Dhillon who is a Sikh also holds various portfolios!

The Bahraini Ambassador to the USA till recently was a Jew woman.

Serge Berdugo a Jewish politician was a minister at Morocco. Egyptian cabinet includes three Christians. The only Hindu Sheikh Kanaksi Gokaldas Khimji of Oman is a Gujarati Hindu!

In reality the majority of Muslim majority countries in the world are secular. Several large examples include Turkey, Mali, , Niger, Tanzania and Kazakhstan. This reflects the pluralism of Islam. At Middle East UAE especially, more than half of expats Indian working here are non-Muslims who are peacefully living here since decades .So who told Muslim majority countries are not secular?

    M.R Jayant FYI
Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, the UAE has welcomed more than 100,000 Syrians, joining 140,000 already residing in the country. In 2011, the UAE was one of the first countries to respond to the growing humanitarian crisis and has provided more than $530 million in direct aid, mainly through the Syria Recovery Trust Fund, Otaiba said.

Since January, the UAE distributed an additional $44 million as part of a new aid commitment of $100 million, he added.

The UAE is funding the Mrajeeb Al Fhood refugee camp in Jordan, home to more than 4,000 Syrian refugees, and has contributed $72 million more to support refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey, Otaiba pointed out.

The UAE is taking action towards peace and stability in Syria, including through its support for the Global Coalition Against Daesh and its role as a co-leader for the Coalition Working Groups on Stabilization and Strategic Communications, he said, adding that the UAE's per capita commitment to the Syrian crisis exceeds virtually every other country's participation.
