Myanmar promises free, fair election


Naypyidaw, Sep 15 (IANS): The Myanmar government will make all efforts to ensure that the November 8 general election will be free and fair, Myanmar President U Thein Sein said on Tuesday.

"Myanmar people hold the opportunity to realise the aspirations of the people and their future," Xinhua quoted U Thein Sein as saying in a speech on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy.

He said election is a huge tasks to transition Myanmar towards democracy.

The voters have the responsibility to ensure the creation of a new democratic state of the future, he said.

Calling for casting votes to choose right representatives, U Thein Sein warned against causing disruption to harmonious communities and wide diversity of belief while canvassing votes.

According to the Union Election Commission, there are 32 million eligible voters in the country.
