China, US, Iran reach broad consensus over Tehran's n-reactor

Vienna, Sep 15 (IANS): The US, China, and Iran have reached a broad consensus on the modification of the Arak nuclear reactor, one of the main concerns of the West regarding Tehran's nuclear programme, media reported on Tuesday citing a Chinese nuclear delegation.

Chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority Xu Dazhe on Monday met Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, and Ernest Jeffrey Moniz, US secretary of energy on the sidelines of a conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Xinhua reported.

China, together with other major powers, would engage in the technical work in the modification of the reactor, which the West worries could produce plutonium for a nuclear bomb.

Iran agreed to modify the reactor in the historic deal reached with related world powers in July, which put an end to the decade-long disputes over the country's controversial nuclear programme.
