Onus on Bengal government for varsity code of conduct: Governor

Kolkata, Sep 17 (IANS): Amid rising instances of campus violence, West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi on Thursday said it was for the Mamata Banerjee government to decide on his proposal to introduce a model code of conduct for state aided universities.

"When I saw such indiscipline was prevailing in several universities in the state, then I gave some proposals to the government on model code of conduct. Now, it is up to them whether they take any such measures," he told the media here.

Tripathi's suggestions entail setting up an advisory committee which will work with the state government to implement the proposed model code for the students.

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on September 8 confirmed receiving Tripathi's suggestions and said the matter would be discussed with the governor and stake holders.

There have been a series of student unrest and agitations particularly at the Jadavpur University and the Presidency University.

The lynching of a student in West Midnapore district during a clash between students in August has taken a political colour with Congress legislator Manas Bhuniya going on an indefinite fast since Wednesday, demanding arrest of the culprits.
