Palmeiras beat Gremio, rise to fourth


Rio De Janeiro, Sep 20 (IANS): Eight-time champions Palmeiras rose to fourth in Brazil's Serie A championship with a 3-2 victory over Gremio on Saturday.

Vitor Hugo and Lucas Barrios scored first-half goals at the Pacaembu stadium before Rafael Marques added another just before the hour mark. Luan found the target either side of halftime for the visitors, Xinhua news agency reported.

The result lifted Palmeiras to 44 points, 10 points behind leaders Corinthians, who were due host Santos on Sunday. Gremio remain third in the standings with 48 points.

Meanwhile, Thiago Santana scored a late equalizer as Figueirense held Internacional to a 1-1 draw in Porto Alegre. Alex Meschini had given the hosts the lead just before halftime.

Despite the result, Internacional rose to seventh with 41 points while Figueirense remained in 18th place on 28 points.
