Celta Vigo thrash Barcelona 4-1 to go top of La Liga

Vigo (Spain), Sep 24 (IANS): A dynamic Celta Vigo stunned champions FC Barcelona, with two goals by Iago Aspas leading the Galician team to a 4-1 victory and help them go top of the La Liga.

Celta Vigo is, at present in the fifth week of the campaign, the team to beat in Spanish first division football after recently knocking off Sevilla and on Wednesday night at Balaidos Stadium dislodging Barcelona from its league-leading slot, reports Efe.

It was Manuel "Nolito" Agudo who got Celta on the board first in the 25th minute on a high shot that snuck into the net just out of reach of goalie Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

And then, just three minutes later, Aspas intercepted a poor pass by Barcelona's Gerard Pique and made the most of it, brilliantly darting in to pop another shot by Ter Stegen.

Barcelona just couldn't seem to find the proper formula to put a stop to Celta's attack and it was Aspas again who swooped in and knocked another one in after the break to make it 3-0.

Neymar took a pass from Lionel Messi to reduce the margin in the 79th minute. But it was nowhere near enough to start a last-minute comeback and substitute John Guidetti made it 4-1 for the home squad just two minutes later.
