Kundapur, Sep 29: The Kundapur police have arrested the accused in connection to the murder of former Beejady gram panchayat member Jayamala, which took place after a drunken brawl on the night of Sunday September 27 at Koraga colony of Kumbhashi.
The police on Tuesday September 29 arrested Jayamala's paramour Papanna, with whom she had been staying after separating from her husband Ramesh and children.
Papanna went absconding after the incident. Police sources said that he admitted to have killed Jayamala by hitting her with a staff in a fit of anger.
Jayamala and Papanna were seen together at around 7 pm on Sunday, and at around 10 pm, they went to Papanna's mother's house in Koraga colony. Both of them were in an inebriated state and had a quarrel. On the morning of Monday September 28, Jayamala was found lying dead outside the house by the locals.
There were injury marks on her head and back, indicating that she had been murdered. As Papanna was missing, the needle of suspicion pointed at him. It is learnt that on seeing Jayamala lying dead on Monday morning, Papanna panicked and went absconding.
The police who took up the investigation searched for Papanna and arrested him near Chempi at Salingrama. Papanna has said that he was not legally married to Jayamala, but they were living together.
