Fresh fish processing facility opens at Tokyo airport

Tokyo, Sep 29 (IANS): A fish processing facility has opened at Tokyo's Haneda Airport to provide fresh seafood to restaurants in the Japanese capital.

About 60 people including airport officials celebrated the completion of the centre at a ceremony in a cargo terminal on Tuesday, NHK news agency reported.

At the facility, workers prepare and vacuum-pack fish caught that day or the previous day. The fish is to be delivered to restaurants in Tokyo.

A local company operating the centre places orders with about 40 fishery cooperatives or fishing firms across Japan, based on online orders from restaurants.

Transport ministry officials said the fresh fish processing factory is the first at a domestic airport.

The operator says the facility will process one to two tonnes of seafood per day.
