Sikh youth removes turban, saves four from drowning

Sangrur (Punjab), Sep 30 (PTI): A 24-year-old Sikh set aside religious code by removing his turban to save four youth from drowning in a canal here.

Four youths, aged between 18-25 years, of Sarafa Bazaar Market had gone to a canal to immerse Ganesha idol on Friday last when a gush of water made them lose their balance at Sular Ghaat near Sunam village.

Inderpal Singh, who was sitting on embankment of the canal, noticed that the youths were drowning. He took off his turban, hurled it towards the youths and pulled them out with its help, police and eyewitnesses said.

The incident came to light after a video was circulated in the social media.

The resuced youths were identified as Inderpal Singh, Jiwan Singh, Kamalprit Singh and Inder Tiwari.

Inderpal, one of the youth saved, said their saviour had first tried to pull them out with the help of a wire that was lying on embankment of the canal but it broke. He then used his turban.

Inderpal Singh's life-saving act was similar to an incident that had taken place in New Zealand in May this year when Harman Singh (22) had used his turban to save the life of a boy who bled from the head after being hit by a car in Auckland.

In every religion there are certain dress codes and systems. For every such dress codes and systems/customs there will be one or more reasons which our ancestors might have personally or through others might have experienced or might have predicted. This might be one of the reasons the turban has been made to be so long. It not only shows Sikh religion but also saves one's head from injuries etc. Here it saved others life.

Sri. Inderpal Singh is a great human being showed real love towards his fellowmen in their desperate condition of life and death. A real hero, GOD BLESS him.

It shows repeatedly about the Sikh religion that they will sacrifice their solid religious attachment to save the lives of other religious people. We all need to learn big lessons out of this to live in peace and happiness.
