10 dead in Peru bus accident

Lima, Sep 30 (IANS): At least 10 people were killed and 16 others were injured when a bus fell off a 300-metre cliff in the Peruvian region of Ayacucho, police has said.

The accident happened on Tuesday when the driver lost control of the bus, which carried around 40 people, near Los Libertadores highway, Xinhua news agency quoted the authorities as saying.

The bus was heading for the city of Cusco, near the popular Inca ruins of Macchu Picchu.

Some of the passengers managed to jump off the bus before it fell, thus escaping injury.

An investigation into the cause of the crash, including interviews with the survivors, seemed to put the blame on the driver who reportedly fell asleep while driving.
