Mangalore, Jul 18: “The report has been prepared to prosecute Ramanna Shetty, the chief accused in the assault on Carmelite priest and others at Koteshwar in Kundapur taluk, recently under Goonda Act” said home minister M P Prakash and minister of higher education D H Shankaramurthy at the legislative assembly in Bangalore on Tuesday July 17.

Moreover other accused Raja, Prashanth and Sudhakar will be prosecuted along with Ramanna Shetty under IPC Sections 323,325,506 and 34

The assurances are being given by government to take legal action on the accused as the issue has come up for discussion.  Congress members K Pratapchandra Shetty and Blasius M D’Souza while drawing the attention of government complained that neither Carmelite priest nor any Catholic organizations were involved in conversion. Protest was held in secular manner condemning the assault of priest and others.  However, a group of people belonging to one party reportedly provoked the protesters that the said priest and his companions should have been beaten with wooden clubs instead of mere manhandling.

The government has assured them that such incidences would not repeat in the future.  Besides, action will be taken against the accused.

This attack is not only on the priest but on the entire community and nation. It is necessary that our people should be educated about communalism. Then only it becomes easier to solve such issues. people tend to forget after some time.

One can subscribe to "Communalism Combat" published by Teesta Setalvad and groups/Cells, have regular meetings/take up such issues and other human rights violations also please take up with National Human Rights Commission, N.Delhi

These hoodlums and rough necks should be given two choices. Either they serve rigorous jail terms and if they do not relish being jail birds, then they should be press-ganged into service with the platoons, companies and battalions of the Army, accompanying them in counter-insurgency operations by being porters, labourers, dhobis, cooks, etc.

If, during their service, their behaviour is good and they appeared to have reformed, then they could be released earlier. Then likes of Ramanna Shetty and their ilk will know what is life like and will think many times before resorting to their criminal ways.
