Afghan forces retake Kunduz from Taliban

Kabul, Oct 1 (IANS): Afghan security forces backed by the air power recaptured Kunduz city and evicted Taliban militants from there on Thursday, an official said.

All parts of the city have been recaptured from militants and clean-up operations have been continuing in all parts of the city to search for insurgents, Xinhua quoted Khalid Amiri, an army commander in the province, as saying.

Sayed Sarwar Hussaini, police spokesman in Kunduz city, talking to Xinhua, confirmed the eviction of militants from the city.

"The operations backed by the US military aircraft began at 11.00 p.m. (local time) on Wednesday and recaptured the city at 5.00 a.m. (local time) on Thursday," Hussaini told Xinhua.

"Scores of Taliban militants have been killed during the operation, which is going on to ensure lasting peace in Kunduz city and adjoining areas," Hussaini asserted.

Taliban militants, who in a surprise attack captured Kunduz on Monday, are yet to make any comment.
