Singapore event cancelled due to haze

Singapore, Oct 1 (IANS): The upcoming Pedestrian Night event has been cancelled due to the worsening haze conditions in Singapore, organisers announced on Thursday.

In a statement, organiser Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) said this was "out of consideration for the health and safety of our staff, our visitors and all street performers," as the air quality continued to hover in the unhealthy ranges, News Asia channel reported.

Singapore is being shrouded by the haze caused by farmers in neighbouring Indonesia burning forests to clear land for agriculture.

Pedestrian Night takes place on the first Saturday night of every month, and a stretch along Orchard Road would be closed to traffic for various events, including live performances and flash sales.

The next Pedestrian Night will take place on November 7.

Air quality in Singapore deteriorated last week, and hazy conditions forced primary and secondary schools to close on September 25.

Many outdoor events have been affected because of the haze.
