12 killed in US plane crash in Afghanistan

Kabul, Oct 2 (IANS): At least 12 people were killed in the US plane crash in Afghanistan, for which the Taliban militants claimed responsibility on Friday.

The US C-130 transport plane crashed at Afghanistan's Jalalabad city airport late Thursday that killed at least 12 people, Xinhua quoted sources as saying on Friday.

Five US military soldiers were among those killed, according to sources.

"There is no new information about the incident yet," a coalition spokesman, Toney Wickman, said, adding more information will be released as appropriate.

Taliban on Twitter said "Our Mujahideen have shot down a four engine US aircraft in Jalalabad," Xinhua reported.

At least 15 invading forces and a number of troops had been killed, Taliban spokesman Zahihullah Mujahid said.

In June last year, a C-130 four-engine transport plane made an emergency landing in western Afghanistan but there were no casualties.
