Udupi: Truck kills young woman, injures 10 bus passengers at Brahmavar

Udupi: Hours after fatal accident, Merita's family donates her eyes

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Updated

Udupi, Oct 3: In a noble gesture, the family of Merita D'Silva donated her eyes hours after she died in a tragic accident.

Merita (23), daughter of Peter and Precilla D'Silva, died after a fish truck rammed into her near Mabukala bridge at Brahmavar, just as she was walking towards a bus that had halted to pick up passengers. The truck also hit the bus, causing injuries to 10 passengers.

Dr Samanth Shetty of Prasad Netralaya conducted the procedure. The corneas of Merita's eyes are being donated.

It is learnt that Merita's two brothers Melwin and Mathew are suffering from visual impairment, and if the corneas match any one of them, they would be tranplanted. If not, they would be reserved for other patients in need.

The corneas can be preserved for about four days for transplantation, and if no match is found by next Wednesday (October 7), they would be used for research, sources at Prasad Netralaya said.

Speaking to daijiworld, Anil Rodrigues, trustee of St Mary's Orthodox Syrian Church, Brahmavar, said, "The donation was not planned, but the thought flashed as her two elder brothers are suffering from visual impairment. Hence, her family members decided to donate her eyes to them. If they do not match, then Prasad Netralaya will contact other patients who are in need."

White lines indicated on photo nos. 7, 10, 11 & 13 makes it very confusing to figure out whether these are meant for pedestrians. Given the fact that the road is expanded and very wide, one can still get knocked down within minutes. The authorities should bifurcate this stretch with guardrails on either side of the road to prevent any more loss of lives. Mangalore has become a death's knell since the past even though it does not fall under the metropolitan jurisdiction. One wonders if the status is achieved, how many more precious lives would be snuffed out. I wonder what penalty will be levied from the fish truck driver by the authorities? Surely, he must've gone scot free by now.

A tragic accident which may have been avoided if the fish ladened truck was driven withing the speed limit. No doubt these days the heavy vehicles are regularly violating the speed limits which leads to reckless driving. Today we have lost Merita with her aspiring dreams unfulfilled If these reckless & rash driving is not controlled then such incidents will keep increasing. I request Daijiworld & fellow readers to raise voice against reckless driving so the RTO Dept. takes appropriate actions.

It is sad that an young, precious life has been lost.Pray God to rest her departed soul in rest.
When there is no such proper traffic rule is prevailed in the region, these kind of incidents are keep happening. As far as Bur drivers are concerned, they are the kings on the road. They can stop their vehicle in the mid of the roads, unscheduled bus stops, left side, right side at the cost of other vehicle owners and public. They don't bother about others. They are bothered only about themselves. For example, they suddenly stop their bus in the middle of the road, even when they find one passenger.Which may be a fun for them but suddenly stopping on the road is always dangerous for others. But they don't understand.

Traffic department should be strict on these bus drivers and there should always be system to stop all the buses in designated bus stands/stops only. All the passengers should wait there in the designated stand/stops only.If anybody violates the system, should be severely punished. In foreign countries,it is not allowed to pick the passengers in the middle of the road and they are picked up only from the designated bays/stands/stops.If anybody found violated, will be punished severely and his/her licence will be impounded for certain period.Traffic department should not be lenient towards anyone.

Many times these reckless bus drivers do abrupt unscheduled stops on highways wherever passengers are available, which is a very dangerous thing to do on a full fledged highway!! The vehicle behind it if is not keep a safe distance behind and speeding will end up in such kind of tragedies!!

It is high time these 'indisciplined and reckless' bus drivers are forced to stop at scheduled stops only to avoid such type of tragedies which snuff out the lives or innocent people!!

Lack of proper and designated bus stops and ignorance of bus drivers and passengers taking away lives of innocent people. It is the mistake from both, the people and the bus drivers. People don’t go to the bus stand they stop the bus wherever they want. Even the bus drivers stop the bus where people show the hand. The result is this! The vehicle which is behind the bus has to stop or dash the bus.

Whats happening in our mangalore-udupi districts?? How many deaths? And our system is not at all serious? If we see the cause for this we definitely blame our GURU who teach driving. whether any qualified driving instructor there in any driving school? What they teach is just hold wheel, press accelerator, apply break thats it. No rules and regulations, no theory,no driving manners, anybody gets licence. Once I was travelling with a professional driver and he was continuously in right track. I told him to drive in left track so that vehicle behind could overtake us. For that he said 'left track free undatha aite overtake malth povad' this is what he learnt in driving school.
