Mangaluru, Oct 4: Expressing their opposition to the Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project and to create awareness on the adverse impact of the project, the Mangalore Cycling Club (MACC) and Mangalore Bicycle Club (MBC) jointly organised a cycle rally in the city on Sunday October 4.

The cyclists, wearing t-shirts with slogans 'Save Netravati' began their rally from Lalbagh.

Convener of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya Dinesh Holla flagged off the rally. The rally culminated at Netravathi bridge near Ullal.

More than 50 cyclists including women took part in the rally to show their concerns regarding the Yettinahole project and register their support to the crusade against its implementation.

In Ullal, after the rally, Dr Niranjan Rai, convenor, Anti Netravati River Diversion Action Committee, Uppinangady addressing the cyclists said, "People of Dakshina Kannada are ready to provide water to any district, but we are not ready to see forests being destroyed in the Western Ghats. My suggestion is that let the state government take water from Netravati river by laying pipeline from Bantwal. The government must stop constructing weirs in the Western Ghats to regualte the water flow.

"There is a hidden agenda behind the Yettinahole project. In the name of providing drinking water, it is an attempt to loot the public money. Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd which is executing the project is a failed body, and that is why it is yet to complete the Varahi irrigation project." he added.

I am by hobby a natural cyclist and I thought, I will contribute some thing to this noble cause by peddling for "SAVE Nethravathi" sanchalana.I have participated in this rally & feel proud of it.I felt sad when I read few loose negative comments about the protest without understanding it.If this project is completed??? (as per Governments plan) then we mangalorean will regret for its ill effect on flora and fauna of the region.every body is free to express their views(The only real Democratic & Secular country in the world) but please be responsible, sensible and understand what U R commenting on.I request & wish in future that every Mangalorean to participate/contribute in his/her own way to support this noble cause to save Nethravathi and save Mangalore's natural environment to our present future generation.

Holding banner for the press and riding to Ullal will save nethravathi? Why dont these people do something useful for eg: swacch bharath. I had once requested a cyclist from this same group to help with swacch bharath cleaning, His answer was its not his job. Kudos to hypocrisy.

I was one of the cyclist who participated in the rally. One great fellow suggested to stone the house of a particular politician. Let him come down to Mangalore to throw stone initially. Another fellow, who doesn't know which problem he has and called the ride as childish play. Kudos to him. This ride is to wake up call for such persons. At least they can see our banner and understand which problem is going to bother them. We are ever growing community of cyclists without caste, creed, status, political barrier in Mangalore, conducted many rallys for social causes in the past and will continue in the future also. We are determined to make Mangalore pollution free, vehicle free a day ( one day in a month) cycle friendly and many more such wishes, causes, and ideas. We are going to protest with pedal power only and won't keep our bicycle at side.

    Dear Sadashiv,
The main purpose of your rally is to oppose the Yettinahole project. Weather it is Cycle, Bike or Walk we all should unite & fight.
Don't do the mistake of throwing stone to Sadananda Gowda's House. Instead of arrange a Rally to Sadananda Gowda's (Main Culprit) house & demand him to discuss this issue with Central Govt. & oppose this Yettinahole project.
All the Best to your team for the good cause.

"let the state government take water from Netravati river by laying pipeline from Bantwal. The government must stop constructing weirs in the Western Ghats to regulate the water flow"

Alternatively, pump the water which is flowing into the Sea at Ullal. It is not impossible.
