Mangaluru, Oct 4: Expressing their opposition to the Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project and to create awareness on the adverse impact of the project, the Mangalore Cycling Club (MACC) and Mangalore Bicycle Club (MBC) jointly organised a cycle rally in the city on Sunday October 4.
The cyclists, wearing t-shirts with slogans 'Save Netravati' began their rally from Lalbagh.
Convener of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya Dinesh Holla flagged off the rally. The rally culminated at Netravathi bridge near Ullal.
More than 50 cyclists including women took part in the rally to show their concerns regarding the Yettinahole project and register their support to the crusade against its implementation.
In Ullal, after the rally, Dr Niranjan Rai, convenor, Anti Netravati River Diversion Action Committee, Uppinangady addressing the cyclists said, "People of Dakshina Kannada are ready to provide water to any district, but we are not ready to see forests being destroyed in the Western Ghats. My suggestion is that let the state government take water from Netravati river by laying pipeline from Bantwal. The government must stop constructing weirs in the Western Ghats to regualte the water flow.
"There is a hidden agenda behind the Yettinahole project. In the name of providing drinking water, it is an attempt to loot the public money. Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd which is executing the project is a failed body, and that is why it is yet to complete the Varahi irrigation project." he added.
