Modi pays tributes to Shyamji Krishna Varma

New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to Shyamji Krishna Varma on his birth anniversary.

"On his birth anniversary, I salute Shyamji Krishna Varma, the great patriot and inspiration for many nationalists", the prime minister said in a statement.

Varma was born in 1857.

The prime minister described him as devout patriot, saying he had ignited the flame of patriotism among many, including Veer Savarkar, Madanlal Dhingra and Lala Hardayal.

Varma died on March 30, 1930, in Geneva and his ashes were brought back to India from Switzerland in 2003 by Narendra Modi, who was then the chief minister of Gujarat.
